May is Mental Health Awareness month and there are plenty of strategies to make our mental health a priority. We can focus on taking time for ourselves to regroup and rejuvenate. We can take time to look internally and address our stress levels and assess whether we need to ask for help on a professional level.
Something we often overlook is the effect that our finances may be having on our mental health.
The ways in which we interact with our money can have a significant impact on our mental health. When we worry about how much we have, how much we save, how much we invest - the anxiety can add up in our minds. If we ruminate too long, it can impact our sleep and cause overall feelings of anxiety, or even despair.
The kryptonite to worry is knowledge.
The more we learn about money, the more we talk about money, the more we address our concerns, the more we break the cycle of financial insecurity, the better we feel and the more confident we are in our choices. Having a plan, and seeing progress in that plan, can alleviate those fears and bring us an overall sense of calm.
Let’s #breakthestigma and talk about mental health. Let’s have a conversation about how our concerns about money can be affecting our well-being. Let’s make a plan and get on the path to a better future.
